Munguía targets Osleys Iglesias for vacant IBF title

Fernando Sabatini has reported that Jaime Munguía’s team is considering seeking a mandatory fight against Osleys Iglesias for the vacant IBF super middleweight title.

According to SabatiniThe request follows a recent move at the top of the division following the retirement of Terence Crawford and the refusal of Canelo Álvarez to participate in the IBF title process. With the belt vacant, Munguía is able to pursue a title opportunity with the sanctioning body.

Sabatini also said that Munguía’s return to the ring had been delayed. Munguía is currently expected to return to action in April 2026. This timeline would allow the IBF process to move forward if a mandatory fight is ordered.

Munguía remains undefeated at 43 and 0. He has competed exclusively at super middleweight since moving up in weight. Iglesias is also undefeated at 15 and 0, with all victories by knockout. He has risen in the IBF rankings over the past year.

Recent communications from the IBF have indicated that Munguía is eligible to be ordered to compete in a title fight, according to statements from the promoter. No official order has been issued at this time.

If approved, the fight would determine the next holder of the IBF super middleweight title. No date has been announced. No contract has been signed. The situation remains subject to confirmation by the sanctioning body.

For Munguia and his team to be willing to take on the bogeyman of the 168-pound division, Iglesias, it’s possible they spotted a weakness in his game. The Cuban Iglesias doesn’t have the same experience as the 13-year-old pro Munguia.

Southpaw Iglesias, 27, has only been in the professional game since 2019. However, he has had over 200 amateur fights and won 184 of them. Being in the amateurs during that time evens things out.
