Liberal MP Chrystia Freeland says she will leave her post as an MP and accept the post of economic adviser to the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyshe said in a social media post.
The position will not be paid and will also involve her resigning from her position as Canada’s special envoy to Ukraineshe said.
“By accepting this voluntary position, I will step down from my role as the Prime Minister’s special representative for the reconstruction of Ukraine,” Freeland said.
Freeland is the MP for the Toronto riding of University-Rosedale.
“In the coming weeks, I will also leave my seat in Parliament. I would like to thank my voters for their years of trust in me. I am very grateful to have been your representative,” she added.

She was banned from entering Russia in 2014 as part of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s response to Western sanctions.
Freeland said Ukraine could become an economic juggernaut by seizing missed opportunities after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Zelenskyy, in a social media post, said Ukraine needs to strengthen what he called its “internal resilience.”
“Chrystia is highly competent in these areas and has extensive experience in attracting investments and implementing economic transformations,” he said.
“Right now, Ukraine needs to strengthen its internal resilience – both for the sake of its recovery, if diplomacy delivers results as quickly as possible, and to strengthen its defense if, due to delays from our partners, it takes more time to end this war.”
She was appointed by Prime Minister Mark Carney as Canada’s special representative for the reconstruction of Ukraine.
She left cabinet in September, but still represents the federal riding of University—Rosedale, in the Toronto area.
His appointment comes as Carney travels to Paris to meet with other Ukraine allies in an effort to end Russia’s nearly four-year war against the country.
