Algeria past edge DR Congo after extra time, Adil Boulbina’s late goal finally separating two tied teams to send the Fennecs into the match. African Cup of Nations quarter-finals.

The match was immediately one of attrition, with both teams struggling to establish any control amid frequent stops and fouls.

DR Congo posed a threat in the first half, notably thanks to Cédric Bakambu, who went close to head and then forced a save from Luca Zidane after being spotted by Theo Bongonda.

Algeria responded with sporadic attacks of their own, Riyad Mahrez and Mohamed Amoura combining on counterattacks, although clear chances were limited before the break.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Algeria enjoying greater possession but struggling to break down a well-organized DRC defense.

Ismael Bennacer was forced off the field with an injury early in the half, while both teams saw their efforts saved as goalkeepers Zidane and Lionel Mpasi remained largely untroubled.

With the score still tied after 90 minutes, the match went to extra time. Algeria began to pick up the pace, creating their best period of pressure.

Baghdad Bounedjah and Fares Chaibi both tested Mpasi, who made two important saves to keep Congo level. The visitors struggled to maintain possession as fatigue set in, conceding territory until late in extra time.

The breakthrough came in the 119th minute. Ramiz Zerrouki found space at the edge of the area and slipped a pass to Adil Boulbina, who touched the ball before curling a right-footed shot into the top corner.

Congo pushed forward in the final moments but were unable to formulate a worthy response. Algeria took advantage of the remaining seconds and celebrated wildly after narrowly qualifying for the quarter-finals.
