Former Australian batter Mark Waugh picked Indian team’s opener Yashasvi Jaiswal to become the next biggest Test batter amid the ongoing 2025-26 Ashes. After appointing Jaiswal, Harry Brookand Rachin Ravindra as contenders to become the next big ones in the red ball format, Waugh chose the former as his ultimate choice.
Jaiswal made a remarkable start to his Test career, scoring 2,511 runs in 28 matches at an average of 49.23 with seven centuries. The youngster began his Test career with a brilliant 171 on debut against the West Indies.
He has already scored two double centuries in Tests and an incredible five scores of 150+.
Asked who would be the next best Test batter, Waugh replied You play sports:
“There are three in the running: Jaiswal, Brook and Ravindra. I’m going with Jaiswal, 24. He already has a double hundred and an average of just under 50. There’s something special about this kid. I have Jaiswal as the next champion batter joining the elite group. A brilliant player, so that’s my choice, the young Indian.”
Apart from his three Test centuries at home, Jaiswal has already recorded centuries in three away countries, Australia, England and West Indies.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan has picked Harry Brook to become the next greatest Test hitter. Vaughan also threw the Indian skipper Shubman Gill’s name in the mix.
Like Jaiswal, Brook is off to a sensational start to his Test career, scoring 3,178 runs in 35 matches at an average of 54.79, including 10 centuries.
“I’m going to add Shubman Gill’s name to it, but Harry Brook. Harry Brook is the next one we’ll talk about. We’re already talking about him on his journey, with the way he’s playing. He hasn’t got the number of runs I expected, but over the next 10 years, we’re going to see some of the most extraordinary innings from this young man. He’s already played a lot in his career so far. He’s an all-format player, and he’s in the boxing office,” said Vaughan (via the aforementioned source).
Brook also scored a Test triple century in Multan during England’s tour of Pakistan in 2024. The right-hander has scored three centuries in New Zealand and four in Pakistan, apart from his three at home.
However, Brook could not reach triple figures in any of the 10 innings of the ongoing 2025-26 Ashes in Australia.
