Missouri Senator Nick Schroer has introduced a bill that would block the Kansas City Chiefs from operating a sports betting site in the state.
This comes after the football team confirmed plans to move to a new stadium across the Kansas state border. That of Senator Schroer SJR109 was pre-filed on December 31 and proposes a constitutional amendment to remove the Chiefs from the official roster of teams legally authorized to operate sports betting.
State Sen. Nick Schroer said he would introduce a bill this week “to get rid of the stupid classification of the Chiefs as Missouri’s official NFL team.”" and I will work to get rid of "the stupid “handshake” resolution on the border war" with Kansas. #moleghttps://t.co/aqnYJJ9WSZ

Although still awaiting approval by the Senate and House, the bill would be put to a vote by Missouri citizens, likely in the November 2026 general election or in an election held on this particular issue.
The bill’s language repeals the section that authorizes sports teams that are members of professional leagues, including the NFL, replacing it with language referring to entities “at any location within each athletic district, as approved by each applicable professional sports team that plays its home games in such athletic district.”
While it is now confirmed that the Kansas City Chiefs will no longer play their home games in Missouri, this would reportedly prevent the team from operating a sports betting site. There appears to be an open door for the Chiefs to continue their sports betting operations, but it would have to come through a third party.
“If a professional sports team designates a sports betting operator to operate on its behalf, then that sports betting operator, rather than the professional sports team, will be required to submit to the Commission an authorization and will be considered the licensee for all aspects of the Commission’s regulatory oversight and control,” the filing states.
This move has been in the works for several years, but was only officially confirmed recently. The team announced Dec. 22 that it plans to build a new stadium, practice facility and mixed-use entertainment areas in Kansas, and thus move from Arrowhead Stadium across the state line for the 2031 NFL season.
