2 dead, 6 injured at Salt Lake City LDS church funeral

Two people are dead and at least six others are injured after a filming in Salt Lake City Wednesday evening in front of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as people gathered for a funeral.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said in a statement that it was aware of a “serious incident” that occurred Wednesday outside a church meetinghouse at 660 North Redwood Road in Salt Lake City while a memorial service was being held in the chapel.

Of the six injured, three were in critical condition, according to the Salt Lake Police Department. Authorities said some of the victims were transported by private vehicle to a local hospital before officers arrived on scene.

“The Church is cooperating with law enforcement and is grateful for the efforts of first responders,” the Church said. “Until more information becomes available, all questions regarding this incident are directed to the Salt Lake City Police Department. We pray for all who have been affected by this tragedy and express our deep concern that any sacred space intended for worship may be subject to any form of violence.”

Sen. Mike Lee, Republican of Utah, released a statement Wednesday describing the shooting as an act of “senseless violence.”

“Join me in praying for the victims of such senseless violence and for all the families of this church,” he wrote on X. “Please contact local law enforcement if you have any information about the perpetrators.”

The Salt Lake City FBI said in a statement that it is aware of the incident and is offering assistance to local law enforcement partners.

The Denver Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said special agents were responding to a reported shooting in the 600 block of N. Redwood Rd. to assist local law enforcement in their investigation.

Police said they did not have a detailed description of the suspect’s vehicle, but officers search the area from Redwood Road to the Jordan River.
