Ruben Amorim and Enzo Maresca were sacked in quick succession in the Premier League. West Bromwich-Albion also participated in the act in the Championship.
Just a day after Amorim’s dramatic Manchester United exit, West Brom would confirm that Ryan Mason had been relieved of his duties, with a last-minute defeat at Leicester City his final slice of action as the Baggies’ disappointing head coach.
It was going to happen, with this defeat already being West Brom’s 13th defeat of the Second Division season.
It is now up to a new manager to quickly turn around the Hawthorns’ fortunes, as promotion could still be on the cards.
Surprisingly, West Brom currently find themselves just ten points out of the playoffs, despite Mason leading the Baggies to a terrible ten consecutive league defeats on the road, before being given his marching orders.
A rescue campaign is still underway, and the responsibility of picking up the pieces may fall to Michael Carrick, who is currently always linked with a move to the Hawthorns, having remained unemployed after leaving Middlesbrough in 2025.
However, with Carrick being also warned being one of the favorites for the vacant Red Devils job, as the powers that be at Old Trafford look for a short-term solution, it may well be unlikely that the 44-year-old will be handed the job at West Brom with all the competition at hand.
Names such as Carlos Corberan And Russell Martin have also been circulating, but another ongoing rumor involves former England interim boss Lee Carsley taking over from Mason.
According to l’Express and l’Étoilethe former Republic of Ireland international is a “possible candidate of interest”, having already been contacted about the Baggies job.
Having found success in the EFL in the past with Brentford, Carsley would surely jump at the chance to return to the Championship hot seat, with the Birmingham-born head coach arguably a better option to bring in than Carrick.
Carrick beat Carsley when it came to their respective Championship experiences, with the former Boro boss claiming a record 57 league wins on Teesside, before the wheels came off his time at the Riverside Stadium.
Indeed, his final full season in charge would see his Boro side stumble to 18 league defeats, with Carrick’s heart perhaps not in another league battle as he eyes a temporary job at the Theater of Dreams.
While Carsley would be eager to embark on the West Brom challenge that awaits him, having been an undoubted success in managing the Three Lions at U21 level.
Two stunning Euro triumphs were achieved by the 51-year-old while in charge of the U21s, with Nottingham Forest playmaker James McAtee noting that Carsley is a manager who “just fills you with confidence” by excelling under his tutelage.
This will surely be music to the ears of West Brom fans, as Mason left his Baggies camp with their confidence levels on the ground.
Attacking midfielders such as Isaac Price would also be happy if Carsley was handed the reins after Mason, based on McAtee’s comments, with Price’s form falling off a cliff towards the end of the 34-year-old’s turbulent reign.
But, with five goals and two assists to his name at the start of the season, the hope will be that Carsley can revive the former Everton midfielder’s Baggies career, having also been reported to have a “refreshing” impact on players by Arsenal fighter Declan Rice, when he smoothly steered the England senior ship following the departure of Gareth Southgate.

Having enjoyed such success with the Three Lions, Carsley can boast an impressive total of 73 career victories as a manager, with Carrick’s 57 league victories falling somewhat flat thereafter.
Further described as an influence that led him to obtain “his smile back” for England by Real Madrid superstar Jude Bellingham, it remains to be seen whether the 4-2-3-1 boss would be able to instantly adapt to the West Brom gig, far from the glamor of Wembley.
But, with Carrick in the Red Devils’ reckoning, the 50-year-old would be another more than suitable choice, as he potentially looks to add to his already six league wins, with promotion hopes stuttering.
