Tottenham have taken a low-key approach to signing an England international who has also been offered to Real Madrid, amid their ongoing talks to sign Souza and search for a new striker.
The Lilywhites are set to strengthen their left-back options with a deal for highly-rated Brazilian prospect Souza, with Spurs agree to personal terms on Thursday.
Talks are now moving forward for the Santos teenage sensation and all indications are that the deal will be completed very soon.
It’s a welcome boost for the boss under fire. Thomas Frank, which sparked heavy criticism from Spurs supporters this week, amid their serious doubts about the Dane’s leadership.
The north Londoners have won just three of their last 13 games in all competitions, with their latest 3-2 defeat at Bournemouth heartbreaking as Antoine Semenyo signed off on his Cherries career by scoring a last-gasp winner.
It happened right after Semenyo rejected lucrative offer to join Tottenham in favor of a move to Man City, and that leaves Frank still looking for a new striker.
Signing a top striker is seen as the club’s goal. January transfer priority after Souza, particularly following the injury to star winger Mohammed Kudus, which is expected to rule him out until April.
There are suggestions from Brazil that Tottenham have made a £26million bid for West Ham playmaker Lucas Paqueta. as they battle Flamengo for his signature, but the 28-year-old’s love of his former club puts them ahead of Spurs in the race.
Man City winger Savinho and Monaco’s Maghnes Akliouche are also among Frank’s suspected targets, but as the Lewis family continue to seek further improvements in the final third, they also plan to strengthen Tottenham’s engine room.
Enter the Crystal Palace starlet Adam Whartonwho has been linked to almost all of the big six Premier League side since its appearance on stage in 2024.
The former Blackburn Rovers sensation’s impressive form that year earned him a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the Euros, and although he endured a stop-start campaign last season due to injury, Wharton is now once again a Palace mainstay.
The 21-year-old has started 19 league matches under Oliver Glasner this season, with Thomas Tuchel also recently reintroducing him to the England fold and giving Wharton his first Three Lions caps since June 2024.
He is now a surefire contender for next year’s World Cup squad, and his sky-high potential is not lost on Tottenham.
According to TEAMtalk and journalist Dean Jones, Spurs took ‘low-key’ approach to Wharton signing as ENIC is considering “statement signings” this year – but that could be for the summer rather than January.
The midfield anchor, according to Spanish reports, will cost a minimum £60 million and potentially a similar fee to Eberechi Eze’s move to Arsenal last summer.
It is also reported by AS that Wharton has already been “offered to Real Madrid”, but Los Blancos have yet to accept, which could give Spurs the opportunity to get there first.
Wharton is undoubtedly one of the most exciting midfield prospects in the country, with Arsenal star Declan Rice revealing in 2024 that he has already impressed many senior England players behind the scenes.
“He was outstanding,” Rice said.
“In training, he impressed a lot of players. He is so composed and calm with the ball. He played his first half of the season in the Championship, he is [come into the England team] from Crystal Palace now.
“He’s got a nice left foot, really crisp passes. And overall he’s just a very down-to-earth guy who wants to learn. He’s obviously only 20, but to be on the plane to go to his first European Championships, what a moment for him and his family and I know he’s someone who won’t take it for granted.”
