Your first destination in 2026 is not a location, but a platform: Hulu.
For what Hulu? It has some of the best movies in its library, with an entertaining lineup of dramas, comedies, thrillers and much more.
This is especially true in January, where the streamer adds new films every week,
Watch with us recommends streaming these three best new movies on Hulu for the weekend: the dark comedy Irrational man featuring Emma Pierre90s teen comedy Empire Records and real-life drama The luckiest man in America.
Professor Abe Lucas (Joaquin Phoenix) is depressed and he doesn’t know how to fix it. One day, he overhears a distraught woman complaining about a crooked judge involved in her custody battle. On a whim, Abe decides to kill the judge, reasoning that since he has no connection to the woman, he won’t get arrested. His instinct is good: after the judge’s death, no one suspects him. But has Abe’s new vocation awakened something dangerous in him that cannot be repressed?
Irrational man has the bones of a thriller, but it’s actually a complex study in the sometimes fragile moral codes that some people live by — and break. Phoenix is terrific as an intellectual who finds happiness in murder, while Emma Pierre is truly great as Abe’s student and eventual mistress. She is the only one who suspects that Abe has done something wrong, but he is her way out of a bad relationship. Can she look away to get what she wants? And if she does, is he as bad as Abe? Irrational man raises difficult questions and some of its answers aren’t as predictable as you might think.

Some films are worth watching not because they are actually good, but because they depict a very accurate snapshot of a specific time and place. Empire Records is one of those films.
Set during the height of the grunge movement, it chronicles a day in the life of the titular independent music store, which is run by an increasingly jaded Joe (Anthony La Paglia). He’s the only adult on the team, and he has to deal with a multitude of crises at once, including that of Vice Principal Lucas (Rory Cochrane) steal money, cashier Corey’s (Liv Tyler) Debra’s hidden drug problem and hoarder (Robin Tunney) suicidal tendencies.
Empire Records This sounds serious, but it’s definitely not. It barely has a superficial plot or characterization; instead, it exists solely on vibrations. Enough to make it a fun watch, even if you want to strangle certain characters. Among the cast, Renee Zellweger stands out as the cheerful Gina, who has never met a man she didn’t want to sleep with.

When truck driver Michael Larson (Paul Walter Hauser) appears on the popular game show Press your luckhe defies all expectations and defeats the reigning champion. As the days go by, Michael continues to win, which arouses the suspicions of one of the producers of the series, Bill Carruthers (David Straithairn). Is Michael really lucky and just a good player? Or did he somehow manipulate the system to keep winning?
Based on an astonishing true story, The luckiest man in America is one of those little films about ordinary people that end up as footnotes in pop culture history. There was really a Michael Larsonand his story is part inspiration and part caution. If you don’t know what’s going on, the climax is surprisingly suspenseful. Who knew landing on a Whammy would be so exciting?
