R. Kelly’s Daughter Buku Abi Opens Up About Misconceptions About Their Relationship After Sexual Assault Allegations
On Thursday, January 8, a new episode of Reginae Carter’s television series, “Heir Time,” aired via YouTube. Additionally, the episode featured Buku Abi as a guest. Additionally, about ten minutes into the episode, Carter asked Abi to share something that “people don’t know” about her mom and dad that she would like them to know.
“Well, one [thing] — I’m going to look at the camera when I say this — I love my dad, okay? It’s a misconception that there is hatred or, for example, animosity towards him – it’s none of those things. At the end of the day I experienced what I experienced [and] my family experienced what they experienced [and] I’m going to hold people accountable. However, this does not reflect how I feel about this man,” she said.
Ultimately, Abi reiterated that she loves her father and supports him as “the artist that he is.”
“But as a human being, you have a responsibility to take care of, and that’s it,” she said.
Abi also spoke about her mother, Dreak Kelly, saying she loves the person she has become and noted that her family is a very “genuine” unit.

According to PEOPLE‘R. Kelly’s Karma: A Daughter’s Journey aired in October 2024. In the two-part series, Buku Abi shared that she was allegedly abused by her father when she was a child. Additionally, she explained that she told her mother about the abuse in 2009, when she was 10 years old.
“He was everything to me. For a long time, I didn’t even want to believe that this was happening. I didn’t know that even though he was a bad person, he would do something to me. I was too scared to tell anyone. I was too scared to tell my mom… I really feel like one millisecond completely changed my life and changed who I was as a person and changed the glow that I had and the light that I carried. After having told my mother, I didn’t go there anymore; my brother and sister, we didn’t go there anymore And even to this day, I have a lot of trouble with it,” she said.
According to Abi, the abuse happened when she was eight or nine years old. Specifically, she said she woke up to Kelly “touching” her.
“And I didn’t know what to do, so I just laid there and pretended to be asleep,” she said.
Kelly’s lawyer denied the accusations against the singer. Meanwhile, after the series aired, Abi clarified her stance towards her father.
