Shakur Stevenson believes that he has gleaned sufficient information on Teofimo Lopez to exploit his “mistakes” on January 31.
Entering their competition as a slight favorite, Stevenson – an undefeated southpaw who currently holds the WBC lightweight title – is now trying to become a four-division world champion.
At the time, Stevenson produced a versatile display, often changing his approach from aggressive to calculated, to convincingly outplay his relentless opponent.
Along with that, the 28-year-old’s consistency at the world level has inspired many to view him as a safer bet for Lopez – an ultra-talented, but largely unpredictable, champion.
His tendency to blow hot and cold may have taken some of the shine off “The Takeover,” although victories over Vasyl Lomachenko and Josh Taylor also proved he was capable of extraordinary things.
Regardless, Stevenson, who has already shared a few sparring rounds with Lopez, believes his superior skills will pay off later this month.
Talk with ALL THE SMOKE FIGHTthe Newark man insisted that whatever the fight stories, there is no world in which Lopez gets the better of him.
“We fought for three rounds. It was cool; [there] it wasn’t really much to evaluate. We walked in there, I felt like I was going down, he probably feels like he did something.
“From my memory, I feel like he can’t beat me. He does a lot of things well – I think he’s flashy – but it’s just basic things where I feel like he makes mistakes, and I think I’m going to capitalize on those mistakes.”
Lopez has previously stated publicly that as their training session progressed, he began to find success against the almost insoluble puzzle of Stevenson’s style.
