Ric Roman Waugh “Greenland” deserves praise for not being a typical disaster moviebut was anyone really asking for a sequel? Sure, the ending of the movie left the door open for one, but it felt like a one-off affair at the time. With that in mind, some might argue that “Greenland 2: Migration” — directed by Waugh from a screenplay by Chris Sparling and Mitchell LaFortune — is an unnecessary sequel, but that’s not the case. “Greenland 2: Migration” is a dark and daring disaster film with an ending that opens up an exciting future for the franchise – a future where anything is possible.
Until now, the “Greenland” franchise belonged to the the king of garbage, Gerard Butler, the decision to kill his character, John Garrity, in the final moments of the sequel is therefore daring. This comes after producer Sébastien Raybaud confirmed plans for a third “Greenlanders” film, despite the (supposed) absence of Butler’s character from the proceedings. As he said Deadline:
“We’re thinking about what might happen next. Something happens in 2 that might be tricky, but I’m sure we can find a way.”
“Greenland 2: Migration” ends with the rest of the Garrity family finding a Promised Land in the form of a crater located in France. It was untouched by the catastrophic events that destroyed the rest of the world, but armies are fighting there, meaning the Garrity family’s stay might not be peaceful in the long run. It’s a scenario that the proposed third film could explore, but “Greenland: Migration” raises other possibilities.
Where does the Greenland franchise go from here?
“Greenland 2: Migration” depicts a world plagued by anarchy and turmoil. Most places have been affected by apocalyptic events, forcing humans to behave like savages while facing radiation storms, tidal waves, and extreme winds that appear out of nowhere. That’s bad news for people in this universe, but good news for moviegoers looking for more thrills in the upcoming sequel.
“Greenland 2: Migration” provides insight into how the rest of the world has been affected by disasters. We see chaos unfold in England and the war brings France to its knees. Elsewhere, conversations briefly detail how Africa and other places were punished. It would be interesting to see “Greenland 3” explore these conflicts and events in more detail, and it would open the door to a story centered around a whole new set of characters.
That said, “Greenland 2: Migration” has a few notable moments that could inform full films. The most obvious is the surviving Garrity trying to rebuild society now that they’re in the crater, with insurgent soldiers planning an invasion. Another possibility is to bring back Denis Laurent (William Abadie), who stays behind to care for his sick wife while the Garrity family takes their daughter to the crater. However, Denis’s country is a war zone, and its location is ripe for a high-stakes survival story in which he and his ailing wife attempt to defy the odds and find a better future.
Who knows where the “Greenland” franchise will go from here? However, the fact that “Migration” kills off its most important character means that the future doesn’t have to be all about Garrity’s story. All bets are off now, and it’s exciting.
