Indian Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill finally broke his silence after being left out of the national team for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2026. Shubman Gill’s response won a lot of respect and hearts as the young batter chose dignity over drama.
Ahead of the three-match ODI series against New Zealand, which begins on January 11 in Vadodara, Gill made it clear that he fully supports the team selected for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2026 despite the disappointment of missing out on a second consecutive global event.

Instead of questioning the Indian selectors’ call, Gill accepted the decision calmly and extended his best wishes to the national team for the world event, which shows his maturity and team-first thinking. With the focus now on the ODI series against New Zealand, Gill is determined to let his bat do the talking after the highly controversial T20I snub.
Shubman Gill told reporters in Vadodara: “I respect the selectors’ decision. All the best to the team for the T20 World Cup. I am where I need to be and whatever is written in my destiny, no one can take it away from me. A player always believes that he will do his best for the country and the selectors have made their decision.”

Shubman Gill’s T20I journey took an unexpected turn and surprised almost everyone. The 26-year-old was seen as a key part of India’s plans in the shortest format when he stepped into the T20I setup as vice-captain during the 2025 Asia Cup.

However, things did not go as planned. Gill struggled to make an impact with the bat and failed to deliver the big innings expected of a top-order player. In the 15 T20I matches he played after returning to the team after over 12 months, the Indian ODI captain did not score a single fifty, which put him under pressure.
At the end of these 15 matches, Gill’s numbers disappointed everyone, as he could only put up 219 runs at an average of 24.25 and a strike rate of 137.26. Even though the strike rate was decent, the lack of consistency and match-winning shots became hard to ignore, especially in a format where quick, hard-hitting runs matter the most.
Considering his form, the Indian selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar decided to drop the right-handed hitter from the T20I side entirely and announced that Sanju Samson will return as an opener in the upcoming T20I series against New Zealand as well as the ICC T20 World Cup 2026.
Gill has so far played 36 T20Is for India, scoring 869 runs at an average of 28.03 and a strike rate of 138.59. After the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand, he will focus on the upcoming IPL 2026, where he will captain the Gujarat Titans.
