What makes the delay notable is not the lack of paperwork, but the lack of ownership. No official promoter has been publicly identified. No broadcaster has been attached. The fight has not been linked to any confirmed event, although it has been addressed in public comments as effective.

Eddie Hearn has referenced this match several times since October, including discussing Saudi Arabia as a possible destination and Riyadh’s season as a logical landing point. Industry discussions have focused on a mid-February card, with February 14 frequently mentioned in unofficial circles. None of this has been confirmed by Matchroom, the WBO or the Saudi organizers.

Coordination alone does not explain the length of the delay. The fight has already passed the most difficult obstacle. Both parties agreed. The sanctioning body withdrew. What remains are business decisions. Placement of cards. Broadcast alignment. Financial asset.

Smith will be 36 this year and is coming off a tough fight with Joshua Buatsi. Morrell, still undefeated, was parked without clarity at a time when momentum usually matters. An interim title fight is supposed to resolve a queue, not extend it.
