You won’t believe this… A Detroit area family just reached a $3.25 million settlement after a tragic mix of missteps and disbelief left them reeling for years. This is not your typical wrongful death story, as a young woman’s case shocked an entire community and her name, Timesha Beaucampwill not be forgotten.
Alright, let’s go! Back in 2020, Southfield paramedics were called to help Timesha, 20, who suffered from cerebral palsy and was having difficulty breathing. After her family called 911, the medical team attempted to resuscitate her and even consulted a doctor over the phone, who pronounced her dead without even seeing her in person. What happened next would leave anyone speechless.
Later the same day, at a funeral home, Timesha’s the body bag was opened– and she was gasping for air. She was immediately taken to hospital but tragically died two months later. Her family’s lawyer, Steven Hurbis, said she “was put in a situation she should never have been in“, noting that medical professionals agreed that Timesha would have survived if she had been taken directly to the hospital from her home.
Southfield initially fought the lawsuit, relying on government immunity, and even convinced a judge to dismiss the case. But in 2024, the Michigan court Appeals overturned this decisionpaving the way for the family to reach the $3.25 million settlement. The Southfield Fire Chief had previously suggested Timesha state could have been “Lazarus Syndrome“, referring to rare cases where people appear to return to life on their own, although this tragic situation highlights the devastating consequences of delayed care.
Do you think these crazy stories of being “declared dead by mistake” are rare? Think again. A Memphis family told FOX 13 Memphis that their loved one was wrongly declared dead by the Social Security Administration – not once, but twice in 18 months. Just weeks after burying their mother, Nicole Edwards received a letter offering condolences over the supposed death of her brother. She said: “I couldn’t even cry for my mother, I had to make sure my brother was okay…I still can’t grieve completely. I’m still struggling with this right now.»
