Arsenal took five minutes to draw level from a corner at the start of their 2025/26 FA Cup campaign after Colby Bishop’s first goal since August gave Championship club Portsmouth a shock early lead.
Restored forward Bishop fired in after Kepa Arrizabalaga – deputising for the rested David Raya – could not hold Conor Chaplin’s shot from inside the box at Fratton Park, threatening an upset after three minutes.
New Gunners signing Christian Norgaard appeared to apply the final touch by bundling in the equaliser, which was credited to home midfielder Andre Dozzell.

“What a moment for Colby Bishop,” former Leeds United forward Lucy Ward told TNT Sports after the opener. “What a noise in here. And what a start for Portsmouth.”

Pompey are a point above the second-tier relegation zone but have two matches in hand on third-bottom Norwich City and have been helped by collecting seven points from their last nine available at home, including a 2-1 victory over Charlton Athletic on December 29.
The restored Bishop’s finish was still a considerable surprise against a team top of the Premier League by six points, with the meanest defensive record in the division by five goals.
Chaplin’s strike in the build-up to the goal was set up by a left-wing cross from Harvey Blair, who went close to restoring Portsmouth’s lead with a curling low drive that was tipped away by Kepa.
Midfielder Mark Kosznovszky and forward Florian Bianchini were missing with knee injuries as part of a long absentee list for the hosts, who made four changes.
Bishop and on-loan Ipswich Town forward Chaplin came in up front, with Josef Bursik starting in goal and Blair replacing John Swift.
Midfielder and captain Marlon Pack was back on the bench after a hamstring injury, but winger Josh Murphy and forward Callum Lang were out with the same problem.
Defender or midfielder Josh Knight (back) and striker Thomas Waddingham (thigh) were also sidelined, as was defender Hayden Matthews with an ankle problem.
On-loan South Korea wideman Minhyeok Yang had been recalled by Tottenham, having scored the third goal of his spell at Portsmouth with their 98th-minute winner against Charlton.
Portsmouth starting XI: Josef Bursik, Terry Devlin, Regan Poole, Conor Shaughnessy, Zak Swanson, Adrian Segecic, Andre Dozzell, Conor Chaplin, Luke Le Roux, Harvey Blair, Colby Bishop
Portsmouth substitutes: Ben Killip, Jordan Williams, Connor Ogilvie, Marlon Pack, John Swift, Franco Umeh-Chibueze, Ibane Bowat, Jacob Farrell, Makenzie Kirk
Arsenal made 10 changes, with centre-back Gabriel the only player to retain their place from the draw against the Reds from their 0-0 home draw with Liverpool.
Winger Ethan Nwaneri made his first start for two months. Defender Marli Salmon, who turned 16 in August, had the chance to become the club’s youngest-ever player in the FA Cup by potentially making his second Arsenal appearance from the bench.
Piero Hincapie was not part of the squad, having been replaced by Myles Lewis-Skelly during the second half against the Reds because of a potential hamstring problem.
Fellow defender Cristhian Mosquera and winger Max Dowman had ankle injuries. Full-back Riccardo Calafiori was sidelined with an unspecified issue.
Arsenal starting XI: Kepa Arrizabalaga, Ben White, Christian Norgaard, Gabriel Magalhaes, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Eberechi Eze, Mikel Merino, Ethan Nwaneri, Noni Madueke, Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli
Arsenal substitutes: David Raya, Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, Jurrien Timber, Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz, Martín Zubimendi, Declan Rice, Marli Salmon
