Stranger Things co-creator Ross Duffer experienced a separation from his wife Leigh Janiak in production on season 5 of the hit Netflix series.
Duffer and Janiak met in 2006 while they were working as an intern and production assistant respectively at a Los Angeles production company. The couple married nearly a decade later and found individual success as screenwriters.
Ross and his brother, Matt Dufferhave become household names as co-creators, showrunners, executive producers and directors of Stranger Things. Janiak, meanwhile, was the creative force behind the 2014 film. Honeymoon and Netflix Fear Street Trilogy.
As production on season 5 began in 2024, Janiak filed for divorce from Ross. Neither of them has publicly discussed the end of their marriage. Amid change in his personal life, Ross ready to conclude his hit Netflix series.
“We’re really happy with how the show ended. I think the finale, especially the last scene, which again, we had an idea of what that scene was going to look like for years, and when we sat down to stop Season 5, that was the first thing we broke,” Ross told The Hollywood Reporter. “Everything really builds around that moment and making sure it works. Because we knew that no matter what we did, we could make eight hours of entertainment that people love, and then if you slip into the last five minutes, that’s all anyone’s going to be talking about!”
He continued, “So you just want to make sure you get through those five minutes, and then hopefully everything will fall into place. We’re so proud of that scene and our actors’ performances in that scene, so we feel good. But it’s still nerve-wracking to present it to the audience.”

2006
Ross and Janiak met in 2006 at a Los Angeles production company where they both worked. While Janiak was an assistant to the producer, Ross worked as an intern and they later began dating.
2015
The duo exchanged vows at the Korakia Pensione, a Palm Springs resort, in 2015. The ceremony was officiated by Jennifer Knodewho was friends with Ross and Janiak and became a Universal Life minister for the big day.
2016
Ross found success working on Stranger Thingswhich inspired a Broadway play and spinoff ideas that have yet to be announced. Janiak, for his part, published a three-part film series Fear Street Trilogy in 2021, to critical and fan acclaim.

2024
After nearly a decade of marriage, Janiak list of legal documents filed a separation date as to be determined and citing “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the separation. Janiak requested spousal support.
In his response, Ross asked to “terminate” the court’s ability to award child support to Janiak.
“The defendant is not aware of the nature and extent of his separate real estate assets and debts and will modify his response when these are verified,” his property response read. “The defendant is not aware of the nature and extent of the community and quasi-community property assets and debts and will modify his answer when these are verified. »
Ross requested that both parties pay their own legal fees.
