Errol Spence Jr. delivered a decisive verdict when asked to name who was the best among Floyd Mayweather Jr. And Terence Crawfordtwo fighters he fought and wrestled respectively.
The former unified world champion lost his titles to Crawford in 2023, around the time their welterweight competition turned into an entirely one-sided spectacle.
Before his punishing ninth-round loss, Spence was considered by many to be the top dog at 147 pounds, having defeated Shawn Porter, Danny Garcia and Yordenis Ugas during his title reign.
Crawford, however, firmly stamped his authority on the division before moving up to 154 pounds, where he dethroned Israil Madrimov to become world champion in four divisions.
The Nebraskan then moved up to 168 pounds, his fifth weight class, and finished his stellar career by outpointing Canelo Alvarez. to become undisputed three-division champion last year.
It is widely believed that Crawford reached his peak at welterweight, even if the level of opposition didn’t quite reflect his greatness.
For this reason, “Bud’s” career is often compared to that of Mayweather, who campaigned in several divisions but achieved arguably his most notable victories at 147 pounds.
For Spence, however, there really is no such competition between the two, as a sparring session in 2013 was ultimately enough to convince him that Mayweather was the better fighter.
Talk with CombatHype“The Truth” firmly insisted that Mayweather’s overall skills and psychological advantage were far superior to Crawford’s.
“It’s a big difference. Floyd is just different. I feel like he’s the better fighter. I don’t know about all time, he might be the best fighter ever and, if not, he’s close to it.
Floyd does different things. He was a lot older when I fought him and there are some things he does that are really tricky.
We’d get in the clinch and he’d hold my nose so I couldn’t breathe and stuff like that. Veteran type stuff, all time. Mentally, I feel like he’s the best.
Mayweather faced Spence in preparation for his WBC title defense against Robert Guerrero, which took place more than a decade before the Texan lost to Crawford.
