Gunther retired on this week’s episode of WWE RAW, but his match continued after the submission. The Ring General faced a veteran for the first time in the main event of this week’s edition of the red brand in Germany.
AJ Styles faced the former champion tonight. WWE RAWand it was a back and forth match. The Phenomenal One applied the Calf Crusher submission hold in the middle of the ring, and it appeared that Gunther typed. However, the referee didn’t see it and Styles released the hold to celebrate his victory.
Thanks for the submission!
Styles argued with the referee and the match was restarted. The former Imperium leader then hit Styles with a Powerbomb for the pinfall victory.
The 38-year-old defeated John Cena via submission in his retirement match on WWE Saturday Night Main Event on December 13, 2025.
Wrestling icon Kevin Nash recently suggested that Gunther didn’t really feel any heat from WWE fans after his victory over John Cena.
Speaking on his Click this podcast, Nash said Gunther has “heat produced” after his victory over The Cenation Leader. Nash suggested that he was only getting booed by the crowd because he was a bad guy, and that his victory over Cena didn’t take him to the next level.
“It’s like last week when it came out, and so its music plays, and then its graphics. Then it comes out and cuts a promo, and then [Adam] Pearce comes out and tells him to get the hell out of the building. So they played his music, played his entrance, gave him a mic, [and] he cut a promo, but when he’s done, it’s time to get the hell out of the building. Because you’re a bad guy and you have heat,” he explained.
It will be interesting to see what the promotion has planned for AJ Styles following his loss on this week’s episode of RAW.
