Stroud and the Texans started the season poorly, losing their first three games and five of their first eight overall. Things weren’t helped when he suffered a concussion in a loss to the Denver Broncos and was forced to miss the next three games.
However, they bounced back afterward, winning nine straight to qualify for the playoffs. After saving Davis Mills putting them above .500, Stroud returned in Week 12 to the Indianapolis Colts and continued the team’s momentum.
Now he faces a Steelers defense that features perennial All-Pros and Pro Bowlers. Cam Heyward And TJ Watt. He said of the unit on Thursday:
“They rush together. They’re going to push the pocket and burn the lead. I think they’re doing a great job even with their effort. … They’re making it difficult and they’re playing really hard. It’s going to be a challenge. Up front, I respect them at a high level and how Mike [Tomlin] also trains these guys.
Elsewhere, Dalton Wasserman believes CJ Stroud will get the job done against the Steelers. He said last Wednesday on Pro Football Focus’ eponymous show (starts at 1:21:47 in the video below):
“How often can he exploit the middle of the field? The Steelers just haven’t been able to defend the middle of the field – at the secondary level or at linebacker, at all. That’s really been the Achilles heel of the defense. If CJ Stroud finds the rhythm in there again, he’ll have a big day in the passing game.”
Kickoff for the Texans-Steelers wild-card game is at 7:15 p.m. CT on ESPN and ABC.
