Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin and quarterback Aaron Rodgers were noncommittal about their futures after the six-time Super Bowl champions missed the divisional round of the NFL play-offs with a 30-6 home loss to the Houston Texans.
Rodgers, a four-time NFL MVP, is 42 and played the final game of a one-year contract with the Steelers, while Tomlin, who has been in charge for 19 seasons, said he was “not even in that mindset” to immediately address his position.
“I’m not going to make any emotional decisions at this point,” Rodgers said, adding that he plans to “step away and have the right conversations.”
“I don’t think we ever had the momentum on our side. They have a good defense but we had a lot of good chances and we hardly took advantage of them.”
Steelers vs. Texans: Tomlin “optimistic”
Tomlin gave Houston “a lot of credit” and observed that their defense “dominated the day.” “I’m certainly grateful for this group and their efforts,” the 53-year-old added of his players.
“We didn’t put our guys in enough positions and we didn’t make enough plays. I’m not going to make excuses – it’s not about excuses. We certainly didn’t play the way we wanted to.
“Talk is cheap, but it’s about what you do or don’t do and we didn’t do it. I’m more in the mindset of what happened in the stadium and what we did and didn’t do.
“You put everything you have into these performances. I always feel optimistic about what we are capable of doing as a group [for next season].”
Aaron Rodgers: Pittsburgh Steelers “special”
Having played for the Green Bay Packers between 2005 and 2022, Rodgers spent two seasons with the New York Jets before signing for the Steelers in June.
“It’s been such a fun year,” Rodgers said. “There was a lot of adversity but a lot of fun.
“It’s been a great year in my life and coming here and being a part of this team has been a big part of it.
“It’s a special place with excellence, tradition and all-time greats. There are only a few truly special places in the league that have the tradition, the city and the organization. [like this].”
Houston will face New England Saturday at Gilette Stadium (3:05 p.m. ET / 12:05 p.m. PT / 8:05 p.m. GMT), potentially followed by an AFC championship game on Jan. 25 against Buffalo or Denver.
Super Bowl LX will be at Levi’s Stadium on February 8 (6:30 p.m. ET / 3:30 p.m. PT / 10:30 a.m. GMT). Should Houston make the centerpiece, they will meet the LA Rams, Chicago, San Francisco or Seattle.
