Senegal And Egypt See you on Wednesday in Tangier for a place in the final of the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Currently ranked second in Africa behind hosts Morocco, Senegal are aiming for a third AFCON final in the last four editions as they attempt to regain continental supremacy.
Pape Thiaw’s side impressed in the group stage with two wins and a draw, before sailing with relative ease into the round of 16.
A 3-1 victory over Sudan was followed by a narrow 1-0 win over Mali in the quarter-finals.
Senegal’s offensive performance was consistent throughout the tournament, but their defensive structure was equally impressive, conceding only twice and keeping three clean sheets.
Egypt, on the other hand, has progressed despite visible vulnerabilities. Their group stage victories required a stoppage-time goal and a penalty respectively, while extra time was required to eliminate Benin in the round of 16.
The Pharaohs then beat Ivory Coast in the quarter-finals despite ceding control after leading 3-1, and they now face a Senegal side who have taken the upper hand in recent head-to-head matches.
Senegal should have a fully fit squad, which will give Thiaw a selection headache in several areas of the pitch.
Captain Sadio Mané has been influential throughout the tournament, providing three assists so far, while goals have been spread across the team, including those from Iliman Ndiaye and Pape Gueye.
Nicolas Jackson will push for a return to the starting XI after being unused in two of Senegal’s last three matches, while Kalidou Koulibaly continues to anchor the defense.
Egypt will once again look to Mohamed Salah for inspiration, with the Liverpool striker scoring four goals at the tournament and seeking a place in the AFCON all-time goalscoring charts.
Defender Mohamed Hamdi is unavailable after injuring his knee against Benin, meaning Ahmed Fatouh is expected to continue at left-back.
Omar Marmoush, who scored against Ivory Coast, should lead the line against a disciplined Senegalese defense.
Senegal: Mendy; Diatta, Callage, Niakhate, Diouf; Directed, I. Gueye, P. Guese; Ndiaye, Jackson, Jackson, Mané
Egypt: El Shenawy; Hany, Ibrahim, Rabia, Fatouh; Attia, Fathi, Adel; Salah, Marmoush, Trezeguet
Kick-off on Wednesday will be at 5pm UK time. In the UK, live coverage of CAN 2025 is broadcast on Channel 4’s 4seven, All 4 and YouTube channels. In the US, beIN Sports is the tournament broadcaster.
Online live streaming is available on a wide range of devices via Channel 4 website and the beIN Sports app and app.
Senegal appear to be the more cohesive and balanced team, which perhaps gives them the advantage. Egypt’s reliance on moments rather than control could be exposed against a well-trained opponent.
Although the competition is unlikely to be open, Senegal’s structure and recent record against the Pharaohs give it the advantage of booking a place in the CAN final.https://x.com/CAF_Online/status/2011015367154610504
