Report, result and goals as Semenyo and Cherki score in EFL Cup first leg win

The former Bournemouth player scored his second goal in as many games for his new club

Antoine Semenyo continues his beautiful start to life Manchester City player, scoring for the second consecutive match as City beat Newcastle 2-0 in the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final first leg at St James’ Park.

Semenyo scored the first goal of the game after 53 minutes and saw another ruled out before substitute Rayan Cherki added a second in stoppage time to give Pep Guardiola’s side a good advantage over the title holders.

Semenyo’s goal comes after the Ghana international opened his City account on his league debut. Beat 10-1 against Exeter City in the FA Cup third round SATURDAY.

In a first half with very few chances, the best chance fell to the hosts. Within the first five minutes, a radical move from Newcastle’s third defender led to Anthony Gordon passing to Jacob Murphy, who in turn sent a low cross to Yoane Wissa.

However, Wissa’s recovered shot from a central area flew over the bar.

From then on, neither James Trafford in the City goal nor Nick Pope in the Newcastle net were really tested.

Eddie Howe’s side were dealt a major blow just before half-time when Murphy was forced off the field through injury, replaced by the in-form Harvey Barnes.

Shortly after the break, Wissa almost atoned for his earlier failure when his header was knocked onto the woodwork by Trafford.

On the same attack, Bruno Guimaraes shook the post as the Magpies went in search of the opener.

But it was the visitors who broke the deadlock. Moments later, a low cross from Jeremy Doku took a short blow from Bernardo Silva before falling to the feet of the onrushing Semenyo.

From just a few yards out, City’s new signing could hardly miss, scoring his second goal in as many matches for his new club.

Shortly after, Semenyo thought he had doubled his score for the evening when, marked from close range by Wissa and with his back to goal from a corner, the Ghana international produced a daring move to volley the ball back towards goal.

However, after a lengthy VAR check, referee Chris Kavanagh ruled out the goal after Erling Haaland was judged to be in an offside position.

The decision appeared to momentarily rejuvenate both Newcastle fans and players, with substitute Sandro Tonali shooting narrowly wide as the match entered the final quarter of an hour.

City substitute Cherki then stopped Pope before Nick Woltemade came inches away from connecting with a Barnes cross late on.

But it was Cherki who had the last word, scoring in the 99th minute to give City a two-goal advantage to take back to the Etihad in just over three weeks.
