Napoli win Italian Super Cup after beating Bologna in Riyadh

Naples won the Supercoppa Italiana after beating Bologna 2-0 in Riyadh on Monday.

David Neres scored a double for the title Series A champions at Al-Awwal Park, home of Cristiano Ronadlo’s Al-Nassr club, as Antonio Conte’s men claimed their second trophy of the calendar year.

Neres found the net in both halves against the Coppa Italia holders as Napoli emerged victorious despite the absence of Kevin De Bruyne, Andre Frank Zambo Anguissa, Billy Gilmour and Alex Meret.

Gli Azzurri, currently third in the Italian top flight, had a good chance to open the scoring in the 37th minute when Neres found Leonardo Spinazzola in the middle, but Federico Ravaglia in the Bologna goal put his finger to the finish, slowing the ball down enough for Lewis Ferguson to clear off the line.

It didn’t matter. Moments later the deadlock was broken in style, Neres racing away from a defender before bending a sublime finish into the top corner.

Ferguson then had a chance after the break, but the Brighton loanee mistimed his jump and his header nestled into the grateful arms of Vanja Milinkovic-Savic.

Napoli and Neres doubled their tally moments later, curling a tricky finish over the keeper from a tight angle after pounced on Ravaglia’s weak pass.

Conte’s side should have added luster to the scoreline late on when Miguel Gutierrez lofted a ball in from the left, but Rasmus Hojlund and Matteo Politano failed to connect.

Minutes later the final whistle blew and Napoli claimed another piece of silverware.
