Former cruiserweight world champion Tony Bellew shared his thoughts on Antoine Joshua and Jake Paul’s heavyweight contest last Friday.
The two men met without incident at the Kaseya Center, Miami, with Joshua sending a fight-ending right hand crashing into his opponent’s jaw.
Prior to this, Paul had already tasted the canvas on several occasions, throwing himself repeatedly in an attempt to avoid any sustained attacks before legitimate knockdowns.
During the time he spent on his feet, the internet star focused almost entirely on his lateral movements, producing only a few overhand forehands in an attempt to land a single meaningful shot.
He did, to his credit, have crumbs of success with this particular punch, and even made Joshua miss on several occasions, but there was always a feeling that he would eventually be stopped.
Sure enough, that moment came in the sixth round, when “AJ” scored his fourth official knockdown and broke a tired Paul’s jaw in two places.
Paul has since undergone successful surgery, while being reduced to drinking liquid food for the next few days.
The outcome of their extremely lopsided matchup could have been much worse, however, especially considering the formidable difference in size and experience. Paul insisted he wanted to stay in the sport, vowing to eventually win a world title at his more natural weight of 200 pounds.
As for Bellew, who posted his thoughts on shortly after their fight, the fact that the 28-year-old was not transported on a stretcher is, for him, a rather positive outcome.
“The most important thing [in my opinion] East [Joshua] didn’t permanently hurt him! I think everyone won last night.
“Fair play to Jake Paul, he tried everything to survive! AJ [did] what he decided to do was arrest Jake Paul! Boxing is and always will be the ultimate 1v1 sport! »
Bellew previously said that “AJ” could end the contest at any time, but it didn’t really work out that way.
