Newcastle Head coach Eddie Howe said the club wrote to seek clarification from the PGMOL after the Magpies were denied a penalty during the match. 2-2 draw against Chelsea last weekend.
The home side found themselves 2-0 up thanks to a double from Nick Woltemade, but were pegged back by the Blues, eventually coming away with just one. Premier League indicate.
However, there was controversy when Newcastle called for a penalty.
As Anthony Gordon and Trevoh Chalobah both ran towards the ball in the Chelsea box, the defender appeared to burst into the England international in an attempt to shield the ball out of play.
However, Chalobah was nowhere near the ball, sparking a furious reaction from Newcastle players and supporters.
Speaking at his final press conference, Howe commented on the incident: “Yes, we will seek clarification. [from PGMOL] and these calls have already arrived, not from me personally but from the club. We just want to know the thought process behind the decisions.
“I wouldn’t want to train them to deliver those kinds of challenges in the box because you’re going to give the referees a decision to make. I think one of the arts of defense is not to put yourself in that position. I thought, and I still think, that it was a clear penalty after looking at it, and I haven’t changed my mind.”
Howe went on to say his team was slowly starting to rebuild their confidence, despite their inconsistencies on the field.
He added: “I would say we were inconsistent at times in our away form at the start of the season, although we were very good defensively, certainly in terms of our offensive performance we were well below the level possible. I would say that has steadily improved.
“So the challenge is to reach these levels [performance against Everton away] that we know we are capable of getting in and out of the house. I believe we can do it. I think the confidence is coming back internally and we now have to show that we can do it.
Unsurprisingly, the Newcastle boss was asked about his plans for the next transfer window.
Reports claimed the club would have to sell to buy in January, but the Englishman was instead focusing on things within his control.
He said: “It’s not a priority for me, with the team we have at the moment, to lose players. I think we will see that when players come back from injury there will be nothing for sure until they are actually back and performing.
“But if there is someone on the team who we think would benefit us and them from going there, we will certainly look at them on an individual basis.”
Newcastle travel to Old Trafford for a Boxing Day clash with Manchester United.
