Christmas came early for Taylor Swift fans on Tuesday, December 23, with the early release of the last two episodes of its Disney+ docuseries, The end of an era.
In the two-part finale, the Grammy winner, 36, opened up about what she wanted The tour of eras mean to his fans.
“I specifically created this tour on a molecular level for people to feel that sense of escapism, but for it to land like that?” she said in episode 6, reflecting on the feeling of having succeeded in bringing this joy to the participants. “I hope that every person in this audience is shaped positively in some way by something they see or something they hear or something they feel during [those] three and a half hours.
However, as the final concerts approach, the “Opalite” singer admitted that she is looking forward to the chapter of her life that will come after the tour ends.
“I’ve been holding my breath for a year and eight months just hoping that we would be safe, that we wouldn’t be hurt and that the tour wouldn’t be harmed,” she said. “For me it’s just overwhelming, just a feeling of gratitude.”
Swift wrapped The tour of eras in December 2024 after 149 shows in 51 cities on five continents. This tour ultimately became the highest-grossing tour of all time, grossing over $2 billion.
The six episodes of Taylor Swift: the end of an era are now streaming on Disney+. Keep scrolling for the biggest reveals from episodes 5 and 6:
During a quick exchange at the start of episode 5, Taylor Swift and her mother, Andrea Swiftdiscussed their impending Thanksgiving plans — and Taylor had a special request from her then-boyfriend, Travis Kelce. (The duo got engaged in August.)
“Can you make these big ribs for Travis?” Taylor asked her mother, 67. “Those he affectionately calls dinosaur bones.”
Andrea then joked about her future son-in-law: “Ribs the size of Texas for a man the size of Texas.”
Taylor spent much of episode 5 discussing how important it is to her that her family – mom Andrea, dad Scott Swift and brother Austin Swift – are there with her on tour. “At the end of the day, I don’t see any of this happening if my whole family hadn’t been involved,” Taylor explained in a confessional interview. “In an industry as unforgiving as the music industry, learning hard lessons and having ups and downs, triumphs and failures, it was a huge challenge for my whole family, but everyone was so locked in my whole life. They all came together to say, ‘No, she wants this, we want this for her.'”
Andrea, for her part, said it was an “honor” to work with her daughter on The tour of erasadding, “It’s a real privilege, and we know that. Because none of us would be doing something that we’re really good at if it wasn’t for what she does and she’s incredibly good at doing it. It’s amazing, it’s fun, but mostly it’s a way for us to be together as a family and kind of honor this thing that we’ve dedicated our whole lives to.”
As Swifties know, Taylor’s maternal grandmother, Marjorie Finlaywas also a singer and served as inspiration for the Always track named in his honor. In episode 5, Taylor’s mother, Andrea, explained that growing up with a professional opera singer helped prepare her for the career her daughter would eventually have.
“I don’t have any musical training or playing instruments, but I have this kind of intimate knowledge of the psyche of someone who really has to do this,” Andrea said, later revealing that her favorite part of the show is where Taylor appears at the very beginning of each concert. “To me, that’s worth absolutely everything. It makes me feel like this was my calling in my life. Whether it was Taylor or my mom, it was to be with someone who loves to entertain and is extraordinarily talented.”
In episode 5, Andrea joked that she always hears her daughter’s new songs before anyone else – but that’s not always the blessing it seems.
“I usually hear about new music within five minutes of it being written,” she told the camera. “It’s the best thing I can think of and also the scariest, because now I know something that no one else knows except the people who were in that room. And it’s a huge responsibility. It’s like, ‘No, don’t send it to me.’ I don’t want it on my phone. No, no, no!”
In previous years The tour of erasTaylor was famous for his meetings, which had to stop after the coronavirus pandemic and because of the massive size of Eras production. Despite this change, it was still important to Taylor to have at least one special moment with an individual fan each night – thus the now-famous “22” hat was born.
“I really wanted to bring back that moment… with a fan where I actually get closer to them,” Taylor explained in episode 6 before revealing how the hat recipients were chosen. “I have people in the audience going through the crowd in the first couple of ‘eras’ trying to find a kid who knows every word to the songs and is having the time of their lives at that show, because that kid is basically like a representative of all the kids in that crowd that night.”
Even though singing with someone in front of 60,000 other people isn’t as intimate as a backstage meet-and-greet, Taylor said she’s still able to feel close to her young fans in those moments. “Everything is happening around us, and somehow we manage to have this moment be completely between us,” she recalls. “It’s kind of like we meet, and everyone disappears for a second. It just reminds me why I’m doing it.”
The end of an era does not address Taylor’s specific plans for life after The tour of erasbut it is clear that she has little interest in immediately setting up another such massive project. “I think after this tour, it would be nice to revive some of the things that I had to cut out of my life,” she explained in the latest episode. “You just don’t have the energy for anything that seems optional. And so I’m interested in getting some of that back, because I know I had hobbies and, like, a personality outside of that tour. I don’t remember what that was about. I’ll let you know.”
Although it might be a while before another tour materializes, the “Anti-Hero” singer stressed that the constant flow of music won’t stop. “Storytelling, for me, is one of the key aspects that makes me feel like life is worth living. It’s so important to me. And writing a song is just the happiest I’ll ever be,” she said in episode 5. “Songwriting happens whether I’m on tour or not. Because my life has always been kind of a fluid state of, ‘You’re living it, you’re feeling it, you’re asking questions. questions, you write about it.'”
The latest episode of the documentary series showed the emotional final speech Taylor gave to his team before the final. Tour of the eras concert in Vancouver, Canada, on December 8, 2024.
“I mean I’m constantly reminded of one of my favorite quotes, which is that everyone is jealous of what you have. No one is jealous of what you had to do to get it,” she began. “Everyone likes to talk about phenomena like The tour of eras almost like they were pieces falling into place in some kind of serendipitous, accidental confluence of events that had just happened, right? When I think of the people in this circle, I don’t think of them as pieces that fell into place.
Taylor continued: “I view each of you as tectonic plates on the earth, and The tour of eras It wasn’t at that moment that all the pieces fell into place – it was just at that moment that all of us, who had done so much work, were where this tour was at, just at the moment when we all clicked together. We have traveled all over the world. We crossed America twice. We set all attendance records in every huge stadium. We broke every record you can break with this tour. All that remains is to close the book. For one last time.
In his latest confessional interview, Taylor admitted that The tour of eras even exceeded her own expectations based on the past milestones she has achieved in her career. “I’m used to doing successful tours,” she explains. “I’ve never been part of a phenomenon before.”
