Michael Douglas and Rob Reiner discussed their sons’ drug addiction together

Michael Douglas and Rob Reiner have often spoken to each other about parenting drug-addicted children and the challenges that brings.

Douglas, 81, reflected on their conversations about their sons — Reiner with son Nick and Michael with son Cameron — during his appearance on the CBS News special. “Rob Reiner: Scenes from a Life.”

“With this terrible tragedy, we realize how much pressure he was under in his personal life with his son. I also had a son who had drug problems. And I’m happy to say that he overcame them and is living a successful life. But we talked about it a lot: what you can do as a parent, what you can’t do,” Douglas said.

“So knowing that with everything that was going on behind the scenes, he was a man who always gave you his best,” Douglas, who appeared in Reiner’s films “The American President” and “And So On,” added.

In 2019, Cameron opened up about his drug addiction, which included using cocaine and heroin, and dealing methamphetamines while carrying a gun, while speaking to Popular magazine.

Cameron was released from prison in 2016, after serving seven years on drug charges. He is the father of two children with ex-girlfriend Viviane Thiebes: daughter Lua and son Ryder.

Nick’s fight against addiction led to 18 rehabilitation visits since the age of 15.

In September, Rob said Nick had been drug-free for six years and was in a “really good place,” in an interview with NPR.

On Sunday, December 14, police found the bodies of Rob and Michele in their bedroom at their home in Brentwood, California. Rob was 78 years old and Michele was 70 years old.

Hours later, Nick was arrested near the Fairgrounds, near the University of Southern California campus.

Last week, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office later said they died from multiple force injuries.

On Saturday night – a night before Rob and Michele were murdered – they and Nick argued at Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party, family friends told the Los Angeles Times.

Many party attendees also noticed Nick acting strangely at the Christmas party, according to the outlet.

Two days after their deaths, Nick was charged with two counts of murder.

“He also faces a specific allegation that he personally used a dangerous and deadly weapon, namely a knife,” Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said at a news conference. “These charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole or the death penalty.”

On Monday, December 22, Rob and Michele’s children, Romy and Jake, spoke about their parents.

“Jake and Romy Reiner remain grateful for the outpouring of love and support they have received,” their spokesperson said. Popular magazine.

“They will later share information about a memorial service in honor of their parents,” the spokesperson added.

Their latest statement comes after Romy and Jake broke their silence on December 17, three days after their parents’ murder.

“Words cannot even describe the unimaginable pain we experience every moment of every day. The horrible and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something no one should ever experience. They were not just our parents; they were our best friends,” they said.
