Richardson Hitchins says Jamaine Ortiz fight is over

IBF junior welterweight champion Richardson Hitchins says he will no longer fight Jamaine Ortiz on January 31, saying he was informed today that the fight was over.

Hitchins made the announcement on Xresponding to audience speculation and questions from Jamaine Ortiz, who suggested he was lined up with a replacement opponent while Hitchins held the title.

“Just know I signed to fight you and just got news today I will no longer be fighting you on January 31st,” Hitchins wrote. “I’m as lost as you.”

Ortiz previously questioned how a titleholder could be pulled from his own fight, writing that he was told another opponent was being sought for him.

This development adds further confusion to what was supposed to be Hitchins’ first defense of the International Boxing Federation 140-pound title. No explanation was provided by the sanctioning body, promoter or event organizers.

As of now, there are no confirmed opponents for either fighter, and no certainty as to whether Hitchins will appear on the Jan. 31 card.

Neither side has indicated whether the cancellation is contractual, promotional or related to a sanctioning body. Further updates are expected once the promoters or IBF resolve the situation.
