3 things we have learned in 8 years of coaching

Note: Be sure to read until the end for an important update on Nerd Fitness Coaching!

Over the past 8 years, we have had thousands of conversations with customers, rebels and community members.

We conducted surveys, read the responses and listened carefully to people’s struggles.

Again and again, variations of three statements came up.

  • “Just tell me what to do.” »
  • “I need to see signs of progress.”
  • “I can’t stay motivated.”

Each of these reveals an underlying trap that I see people falling into, and I want to help you avoid making the same mistakes!

“Just tell me what to do.” »

Trap: Overly restrictive plans that leave you exhausted

Need: clarity that fits your life

People I talk to feel overwhelmed and overloaded.

They already have a lot on their plate with work, family, and other responsibilities.

It’s no wonder someone just wants to make things simple!

But it backfires when it leads to plans that don’t suit your life.

Exercise that’s not at the right level, restrictive meal plans, and schedules that assume you have all the time and energy in the world leave you exhausted and back to square one.

We learned to emphasize fit and flexibility First of all.

This way you get clarity on next steps while ensuring there is enough flexibility to make it work for you. ❤️

“I need to see signs of progress.”

Trap: switching from one program to another

Need: multiple levels of feedback loops

Change is difficult.

And it’s even harder if you feel like you’re spinning your wheels and getting nowhere! I bet many of us have started a new workout or nutrition program, only to step on the scale or look in the mirror and feel deflated and like nothing happened.

This can lead to program hopping – moving from one thing to another so quickly that it is difficult to assess their effectiveness.

Fitness is like investing: the biggest returns take time!

So here’s how we approach this problem: we follow both efforts AND results.

  • Effort: training carried out, habits practiced, regularity
  • Results: strength gains, body composition, easier progress through the day, sleep quality, energy levels, etc.

Consistency victories are a early form of progress. They are the first step in assessing whether a program is right for you.

Outcome gains come later, but it is still important to consider them when evaluating changes to make.

Some tools we like to accomplish each of these goals:

  • Pot of Awesome (effort): Every time you make a choice you’re proud of, add a marble (or note) to the pot. Watch the victories pile up.
  • Zoom out sessions (results): set a pace (we recommend every 2-6 weeks) to assess your progress. This keeps you from adjusting things too quickly while still giving you clear checkpoints to make changes.

Having feedback loops in each of these areas helps you stay more confident and patient. 🙌

“I can’t stay motivated.”

Trap: thinking all or nothing

Need: Systems that support consistency

It’s the biggest. Life gets complicated. People get sick, work gets delayed, and chaos happens.

It’s easy to get lost and blame ourselves and our lack of motivation for not being able to follow through.

This leads to a lot of all-or-nothing thinking.

Either we’re all in this together (and things are going well!), or we’re off course and struggling to get back on track.

Here’s how to avoid this pitfall:

The more you practice implementing these systems, the easier it will be to maintain your momentum. 💪

Quick Checklist

When reviewing your own plan, ask yourself:

1. Does this give me clarity that actually fits my life?

2. Do I have feedback loops to track efforts And results?

3. Do I have systems to help me cope when life gets complicated?

If so… AWESOME! You are ready to succeed.

Otherwise… no worries. Start with the one that seems weakest and strengthen it first.
