With Smith, Jhye Richardsonwill in all likelihood make the playing XI in place of Cummins, with Todd Murphy replacing Nathan Lyon, who was injured on the final day of the Adelaide Test.

Smith’s return would mean an overhaul in the middle order with Usman Khawaja, who was a last-minute entry into the playing XI in the last Test, expected to bat at number five, meaning Josh Inglis could be missed in Melbourne.

It will be up to the top five hitters to score the bulk of the team’s runs and not depend on lower-order hitters to get them out of trouble.

Unlike the batting, who will not see many changes, the Australian bowling team will be without the services of regular captain Pat Cummins and experienced spinner Nathan Lyon, as mentioned above.
