Paul George had 25 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and four steals on 9-for-20 shooting (4-for-9 from the 3-point line). Kelly Oubre Jr. contributed 27 points and four rebounds.
Both teams were on a losing streak. With the win, the Knicks snapped their two-game slump. Meanwhile, the Sixers have lost their previous nine games — the longest active skid in the NBA and the franchise’s longest since 2017. They are on opposite ends of the Eastern Conference. New York (38-20) sits comfortably at the No. 3 spot, while Philadelphia is 12th with a 20-38 record.
Wednesday’s game is the third of four matchups between the teams. The Knicks lead the season series against the Sixers, 3-0. On Jan. 15, Brunson scored 38, while Maxey had 33 points.
Former MVP Joel Embiid was out again on Wednesday. He has only played in 19 games this season, and Philly is 8-11 in those games. Karl-Anthony Towns was sidelined for New York due to a left knee injury.
The New York Knicks had a 33-21 lead over the Philadelphia 76ers at the end of the first quarter. Mikal Bridges was off to a hot start. He had 19 points on 8-for-10 shooting. Jalen Brunson added eight points and seven assists for New York. On the other hand, Kelly Oubre Jr. had 12 points (5-for-6 shooting) for Philly.
Heading into the halftime break, the Knicks still led 61-45. New York went 59.0% in the first half, while Philly shot just 17-for-45 (37.8%).
The Sixers ended the third frame on an 11-4 run and won the quarter 29-22. However, the Knicks still held a nine-point advantage going into the fourth, 83-74.
With under five minutes left, Philly had trimmed the New York lead to one, 96-95. Maxey’s layup with about four minutes left gave Philly the lead 97-96. Brunson went on a personal 9-0 run to reclaim the lead for New York, 107-102 with 32.1 seconds remaining. The Knicks held on to the home win, 110-105.
