Borussia Dortmund’s brand new away kit for the 2025/26 season has sparked fury from supporters, prompting the club to acknowledge the backlash and pledge to respond.
The kit, which combines a white base with black sleeves and neon yellow detailswas worn for the first time in the 2-0 Bundesliga win over Heidenheim on Saturday.
But instead of enthusiasm, his debut sparked anger in the stands and online. Fans unfurled banners blowing it up “the cruelest jersey in the league” while songs of “We want black and yellow jerseys” » rang out before kick-off, vividly recalling the traditional colors of the club.
On social networks, the reaction was not more lenient. Many supporters have called the design a betrayal of Dortmund’s historic identity, with critics saying it looks more like a training top than a jersey fitting for the famous Black and yellow.
Club bosses have now pledged to listen.
Chief executive Carsten Cramer took personal responsibility for the fallout, telling reporters: “The criticism has been received and we are responding to it. The responsibility lies with me. We will not always be able to please everyone when choosing jerseys.”
Sporting director Sebastian Kehl was more measured, reminding fans that opinions on jersey design are still divided.
“I think we have different opinions on jerseys every year,” he said. “A Borussia Dortmund jersey will never be 100 percent approved. Basically, we know what colors our city and club represent, and this is reflected in the design of almost all jerseys.”
He added with a touch of humor: “But there are also people who want something younger, fresh, creative. The new jersey brought BVB three points in Heidenheim. A successful jersey, I would say. Everything else is a discussion that we, as a club, consider normal.”
It remains to be seen whether the jersey will make another appearance during Dortmund’s trip to Mainz on September 27, but if it does, you better believe Dortmund fans will have something to say about it.
