“Mornings with Maria” host Maria Bartiromo interviews Cardinal Timothy Dolan about his resignation and the pope’s selection of Ron Hicks as the new archbishop of New York.
Cardinal Timothy Dolan will celebrate his last Christmas Mass at midnight at St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Dec. 24 as he retires, but he has a plan to keep busy, a business plan.
Dolan said he has already received offers to write a book and participate in a documentary as he leaves his role as archbishop of new Yorka position he has held for approximately 16 years.
In a recent interview with Maria Bartiromo on “Sunday Morning Futures,” Dolan spoke about the steps he took towards retirement and what he hopes to pursue next.
“People know that when you turn 75, any bishop will be retired soon,” Dolan said. “So people know about it and they’ll start writing to you. So, I’ve been getting requests, like going to some universitiesjust to be on campus, maybe to take a sabbatical, maybe to teach a class.

“I’ve even been asked to write a book. I’ve been asked to make a documentary on the status of the Church in the United States. So, things happen, and I’m going to kind of enjoy the opportunity to set my own schedule.”
Dolan said he submitted his resignation in February, as required by canon law.
“It is canon law, Church law, that when a bishop reaches 75, you must submit your resignation to the bishop. from Romethe Holy Father,” Dolan said. “So, I did, and about two weeks later I got the letter saying…’The Holy Father accepts your resignation.'”

The Vatican announced Thursday that Pope Leo had named Bishop Ronald Hicks of Joliet, Illinois, as the next archbishop of New York, placing him at the head of the 2.8 million Catholics who make up the Archdiocese of New York.
Dolan has led the archdiocese since 2009.
Dolan will continue to oversee the archdiocese as apostolic administrator until Archbishop-designate Hicks officially takes office Feb. 6 at St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
