Shakur Stevenson has been championed for his “take-all” approach and willingness to take on the toughest fights possible, although this willingness is not often reciprocated. However, there is one man the Newark sensation has no interest in fighting unless he is offered a huge amount of money.
The 28-year-old southpaw has progressed through the divisions to become a three-division world champion and is now ready to step up to the welterweight stage and challenge Teofimo Lopez for WBO super lightweight world title in five weeks.
It remains to be seen whether Stevenson will stay at 140 pounds or look to move up to the welterweight division if he succeeds in dethroning Lopez. However, if he chooses to stay at the weight, there is one fellow American he has no plans to face.
Talk to The art of dialogueStevenson explained that he would not fight his good friend Keyshawn Davis unless he was offered a scholarship that would provide him with generational wealth.
“I understand how you might feel when you don’t understand someone’s relationship with someone, but he’s my brother, my right hand man. Why am I putting on a show in front of all of you, why am I fighting my brother in front of the world, that might fuck up our relationship because at the end of the day I’m competitive as f**k, he’s competitive as f*ck and there has to be a winner and a loser.
“I ain’t about to let niggas beat me, I don’t care who it is. So at the end of the day it would be between me and his relationship, I don’t care what anyone else thinks about that.
“Unless our mother gives us $500 million or some crazy shit that’s going to feed our families for the rest of our lives and the generations that follow, then I don’t care. [about fighting Keyshawn]That’s how it is.”
Davis won the WBO lightweight world title earlier this year, but missed weight before an early defense against Edwin De Los Santos. in June, prompting a move to super-lightweight.
“The Businessman” has yet to fight since, but he is the WBO’s mandatory challenger in the division, meaning Stevenson may have to vacate the belt if he beats Lopez and wishes to avoid fighting Davis.
