Herzog said he was shocked by “this horrible killing.” He said Israel was “committed to strengthening this difficult border and, of course, strengthening the security response in the region for the full safety of residents.”

Mike Huckabee, the US ambassador to Israel, condemned the attack “against innocent civilians”.

“For Jew-haters and anti-Israel people, these intentional killings threaten a short- and long-term solution to lasting peace,” he wrote in an article on social networks.

Shortly after the attack, the Israeli military began gathering troops near the Palestinian town of Qabatiya, where Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said the attacker was from.

Katz said he ordered troops to “act forcefully and immediately” against what he called “terrorist infrastructure” in the city.

It is common for Israel to launch raids on West Bank towns where attackers come from or to demolish homes belonging to attackers’ families. Israel says this helps locate militant infrastructure and prevent future attacks. Rights watchdogs call these actions collective punishment.

Raids have been carried out in recent weeks in the Qabatiya region, located in the northern West Bank, near the large city of Jenin.

Friday’s incident came a day after a plainclothes Israeli reserve soldier rammed his vehicle into a Palestinian man as he prayed on the side of a road in the West Bank.

The war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians and sparked a surge of violence in Israel and the occupied West Bank, with an increase in Palestinian militant attacks as well as Israeli settler violence against Palestinians.

In September, Palestinian attackers opened fire at a bus stop during the morning rush hour in Jerusalem, killing six people and wounding 12 others, according to Israeli officials.
