Beijing imposed sanctions on Friday against 20 American defense-related companies and 10 executives, a week later. Washington announces large-scale arms sales to Taiwan.
The sanctions involve freezing companies’ assets in China and barring individuals and organizations from dealing with them, according to China’s Foreign Ministry.
Companies include Northrop Grumman Systems Corporation, L3Harris Maritime Services and Boeing in St. Louis, while the founder of defense company Anduril Industries, Palmer Luckey, is among the sanctioned executives, who can no longer do business in China and are barred from entering the country. Their assets in the East Asian country have also been frozen.
The announcement of a US arms sales program, valued at more than $10 billion, sparked an angry response from China, which claims Taiwan as its own and says it must come under its control.
If approved by the US Congress, it would be the largest ever US weapons program in the self-governing territory.
“We once again emphasize that the Taiwan issue lies at the very core of China’s core interests and constitutes the first red line that must not be crossed in Sino-US relations,” China’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday. “Any company or individual that engages in arms sales to Taiwan will pay the price for their wrongdoing. »
The ministry also urged the United States to stop what it called “dangerous measures of arming Taiwan.”
Taiwan is a major hotspot in US-China relations analysts fear that it could degenerate into a military conflict between the two powers. China says US arms sales to Taiwan would violate diplomatic agreements between China and the United States.
China the army increased its presence in the skies and waters of Taiwan in recent years, jointly organizing exercises with its warships and combat aircraft daily near the island.
Under U.S. federal law, the United States is required to assist Taiwan in its self-defense, a point that has increasingly sparked controversy with China. Beijing already has tense relations with Washington over trade, technology and other human rights issues.
