Chevy Chase opens with a health issue that landed him in the hospital for five weeks.
In the upcoming documentary, “My Name is Chevy Chase and You’re Not,” which premieres Jan. 1 on CNN, the 82-year-old actor and his family discuss his hospital stay after a heart problem, with his daughter, Caley, saying, “[He] essentially came back from the dead”, according to Variety.
“Something was wrong and he couldn’t explain to me what was wrong. So, we go to the emergency room. His heart stops,” Chase’s wife, Jayni, said in the documentary. “During those years of drinking, he had cardiomyopathy; when the muscles of the heart weaken and can no longer pump as much blood with each beat.”
His longtime friend Peter Aaron also appeared in the documentary, revealing that after his heart problem, doctors “decided to put him in a coma for maybe eight days.”

His daughter said doctors then advised the family to “prepare for the worst,” telling them, “We may not get him back” and, even if they did, “we don’t know how bad he will be.”
The actor spent five weeks in hospital in 2021 after his health issue, although he did not specify the nature of his illness at the time.
“These are my first days at home. I can only say how happy I am to be back with my family. I feel great,” he told Page Six at the time. “I was in the hospital for five weeks. A heart problem. So, for now, I’m at home. I’m not going anywhere.”
Chase previously opened up about his diagnosis with alcoholic cardiomyopathy, a disease characterized by a weakening of the heart muscle caused by excessive alcohol consumption, in 2018 during an interview with the Washington Post.

“Heart failure, that’s what it’s about,” Chase said in the documentary, adding that he’s “doing fine now.”
The “National Lampoon’s Vacation” star made his Hollywood breakthrough as an original cast member of “Saturday Night Live.” He became the first actor to leave the series, making his exit at the end of the first season in hopes of pursuing a music career.
In February, the popular sketch comedy show celebrated its 50th anniversary with a three-hour live special featuring current and former cast members coming together to celebrate some of the show’s most iconic moments. Chase, who was present but did not participate on stage at all, was noticeably left out of the celebration.
“It was actually quite upsetting,” he said in the documentary. “This is probably the first time I’ve said it. But I expected that I would also be on stage with all the other actors. When Garrett [Morris] and Laraine [Newman] I went on stage there, I was curious why I didn’t do it. Nobody asked me. Why was I left out? »

Chase added that he contacted the “SNL” creator Lorne Michaels about his exclusion, but said he took it back and used it as a joke. But, in reality, he felt like “someone made a mistake and they should have had me on stage.” It hurt.”
