The Hobart Hurricanes have strengthened their BBL|15 title defense with a tense four-wicket win over the Perth Scorchers in Perth on Friday, but celebrations were tempered by a worrying hamstring injury for the star finisher Tim David.
The win took Hobart to a 3-1 start to the season and kept them firmly in the playoffs, but David’s injury threatens to become a major subplot as the tournament progresses.
Perth Scorchers post a modest total of 150/8
Batting first, the Scorchers struggled to build sustained momentum and finished with 150 for 8. Opener Finn Allen top-scored with a quickfire 43, providing early momentum before the wickets stalled the innings.

Tim David forced to retire, injured
The turning point came in the 15th, when Tim David “pingé” his right hamstring while attempting a quick single. He immediately limped off and was forced to retire injured on 42, with Hobart at 103 for 4.
The sight of David limping caused a silence in the Hurricanes camp. After the match, the finisher described his injury as a sensation “a little something” adding that further testing and evaluation would determine the severity. It is important to note that at this stage no official decision has been made regarding the cancellation of the tournament.
Mac Wright and Chris Jordan close out tense chase for Hobart
Despite losing their key finisher, Hobart showed composure in the closing stages. Macalister Wright played an unbeaten knock of 22 from 13 balls, while Chris Jordan chipped in with 15 from 11, leading the Hurricanes to 153 for 6 with three balls to spare.
The calm finish under pressure highlighted Hobart’s depth and resilience – qualities that have defined his title defense thus far.

David’s injury casts shadow over Hurricanes’ BBL campaign

The concern extends beyond hurricanes. Australia’s selectors are closely monitoring the situation, with David a key finishing option ahead of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which will be played in India and Sri Lanka in February.
