Wayne Rooney has shared a moving tribute to his friend and boxing legend Ricky Hatton following the tragic news of his death at just 46 years old.
Hatton, a former world boxing champion, was found dead at his home in Manchester on September 14.
Although the cause of death has not been revealed, police have confirmed it is not being treated as suspicious.
Rooney, 39, enjoyed a close friendship with Hatton, having worn his belts in the ring before Hatton’s victory over Jose Luis Castillo in Las Vegas in 2007. The Wayne Rooney Showhe reflected on the devastating loss.
“Ricky was a very good boy and a good person,” Rooney said. “He captured the hearts of the nation. The support he received was incredible and people followed him everywhere.”
Rooney also expressed his condolences to Hatton’s family and friends, saying: “I want to extend my condolences to his family and everyone who was really close to him. It’s way too soon.”
The former Manchester United and England striker said he received the news of Hatton’s death shortly after taking part in a legends exhibition match for Manchester United in South Korea.
“It hasn’t completely worked yet,” Rooney added. “It’s devastating. Heartbreaking.”

Rooney was not the only footballer to pay tribute to Hatton, who during his distinguished career in the ring held world titles in two weight classes: light welterweight and welterweight.
Jack Grealish, sharing his condolences on Instagram, described the boxing legend as a “true legend” and an “absolute diamond” every time they met.
“It’s sad news mate,” Grealish wrote. “My thoughts are with his family and friends. RIP Hitman.”
Roy Keane, Micah Richards and countless others from the football world also expressed their sadness, as did Tyson Fury from the boxing community. The heavyweight champion shared his heartbreak on Instagram, saying: “Tear up the legend @rickyhatton, may he tear up. There will only be one Ricky Hatton. I can’t believe it, so young.”
