Deontay Wilder is beginning to put a plan in place for his return to top-level heavyweight boxing.
Losses to Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang left many feeling retirement was imminent for the 40-year-old Wilder, but he returned this year with a simple victory over Tyrell Herndon with the promise of big fights in 2026.
Those plans were recently reinforced when unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk revealed that Wilder was on his list of targets, and the teams have already started discussions to achieve this.
Shortly after this development, Wilder publicly confronted British fan favorite Derek Chisora. Speaking about the incident with Cigar Discussionhe revealed that he is now aiming for this fight before challenging Usyk.
“It’s real. This could be a real fight. You know what? I was like, ‘Let him be the warm-up for the Usyk fight.’ I love it.
Wilder – who said a fight with Chisora was 90% agreed upon before talks ended – praised the matchup.
“If you know Derek, you know he’s not a pushover. You’re not going to bully him. The mentality he has, he has an alpha male mentality. And when you go up against another alpha male, that’s a problem. It’s like two gorillas.
“When he got there, he assessed me. He put his forehead against mine and started pushing, and I said, ‘Wait, bro, what do you think that is?’ I had to show him too. It started to get a little out of hand, security [stepped in]. It’s a good start for whatever happens. I called my manager, he called his manager. They called.
Chisora has 49 fights in his professional campaignand searches for the ideal dance partner for number 50. A trilogy with Dillian Whyte failed but could be revisited. “Del Boy” could also target a top IBF contender given his favorable position in the rankings. Wilder doesn’t provide that, but he does bring star power and, in the eyes of many, a favorable matchup.
