Nancy and Jonathan had an emotional moment – with a proposal – in the second part of Stranger Things season 5 but was the scene really a breakup?
During the second part of the last seasonbroadcast on Thursday December 25 in Nancy (Natalia Dyer) and Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) found themselves in a near-death situation. This led to a heart-to-heart during which they re-evaluated their relationship – and admitted to hiding from each other.
Nancy and Jonathan recognized that their common trauma prevented them together. “It made me feel safe. But also,” Jonathan said before Nancy added, “It can be suffocating.”
Jonathan finally revealed the engagement ring he was going to use to propose. Instead of asking for Nancy’s hand in marriage, he asked her if she “wouldn’t marry him” and noted that getting engaged “would only make things worse” for them.
“I think I’ve messed up enough with you that it might be nice to get it right for once, at the end,” he said. “Nancy Wheeler, won’t you marry me?”
Nancy accepted Jonathan’s “non-proposal” and said they loved each other before realizing they were safe. Their focus shifted to finding a way out so that they would no longer address their relationship situation. After the episodes premiered, some viewers were surprised to discover off-screen that Nancy and Jonathan’s scene was about to end.

Matt said that he and co-creator Ross Duffer I’ve known this for “a while” that a breakup was planned for Nancy and Jonathan, adding: “It’s hard to remember when exactly that idea came up, but I think we – and the writers – all felt that Nancy needed to be alone, to be independent and to have an opportunity to find herself.”
He continued, “I mean, how many people end up with their girlfriend or boyfriend that they met in high school? [They] have a slightly more complicated relationship than normal high school students.
Ross, meanwhile, spoke about their bond as a “traumatic bond”. The fictional couple have been the focus of the series since its debut in 2016. Off-screen, Dyer, 30, and Heaton, 31, found love and continued dating. Stranger Things is preparing to end.
Us every week confirmed in 2017 that the costars had removed the romance from the screen. Dyer then reflected on the “pros and cons” of working with her boyfriend, exclusively telling Us in 2018, “It’s really a lot of fun. He’s fine, I guess. He doesn’t ruin our scenes too much! No, he’s great. He’s talented, like everyone in the cast. They’re all great, he’s just great to work with.”
More recently, the actress recalled having to adjust to dating in the public eye.
“The strangest thing about [our relationship] is the perception and reaction of others. Everything else seems very human. This is an understanding that would be difficult to replicate. It’s an indescribable thing,” she told Cosmopolitan UK in May 2022. “I’m always curious why it comes up. Why do people want to know more?
