Slot praises Florian Wirtz’s ‘special’ exhibition

Liverpool were unconvincing in beating winless Wolves.

Arne Slot hailed a “special” performance from Florian Wirtz after scoring his first Premier League goal in that of Liverpool 2-1 victory against Wolves.

Victory over the The last Premier League clubwhich remains winless in the league this season, has not been as easy as many would have thought.

Ryan Gravenberch opened the scoring in the 41st minute, followed shortly after by Wirtz’s long-awaited first place in the league.

Yet Santiago Bueno pulled one back for Wolves, who had the better chances to score the game’s fourth goal as Liverpool held on for an unconvincing victory to send the Reds into the top four.

Yet it was a day to remember for Wirtz, who signed for £100million in the summer but has come under scrutiny due to his lack of goal involvement.

Speaking to BBC Match of the Day, Slot was full of praise for Wirtz and his overall impact, saying the disappointing numbers do not reflect his influence.

“It’s good for him to score his first goal,” Slot said.

“He was very important for us throughout the season. But in football it’s about results, you are mainly judged by results or by goals and assists. I think today he showed much more than the goal he scored; he was special for us in many moments of the match.”

Wolves’ goal was the product of a familiar Liverpool problem, which allowed Bueno to convert into an empty net after the hosts failed to clear a corner.

“For a long time, until 2-1, that was how I wanted the game to go,” Slot said.

“But then we conceded, and not for the first free kick. But the good thing about it is that for a large part of the season when we conceded a free kick we lost the game, but in the last two games we were able to win.

“We also understand that we need to improve in this part, that’s clear and obvious.”
