Yoshua Bengio launches LawZero, a nonprofit AI safety lab


The winner of the Turing Prize Yoshua Bengio is Launch of a non -profit AI security laboratory called Lawzero To build safer AI systems, he told Financial Times on Monday.

Lawzero raised 30 million dollars in philanthropic contributions from the founding engineer of Skype Jaan Tallinn, the former Google chief Eric Schmidt, open philanthropy and the Future of Life Institute, among others. The name Lawzero is a nod to a science fiction concept: the Zeroth Law of Roboticswhich places the protection of humanity above all.

Bengio, considered one of the “sponsors” of the Boom of modern AI, has become one of the most vocal defenders of the IA security movement. He publicly supported SB 1047The California’s controversial security of AI law which was aimed at preventing AI systems from provoking catastrophic scenarios.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Bengio said that he had little confidence in Openai and Google to prioritize security while they were circulating towards smarter AI systems.
