President Lee Jae-Myung is committed to attacking the economy and improving relations with North Korea after his oath.
New from South Korea President Lee JAE-MYUNG committed to “heal” after months of political and economic disorders across the country and to reopen dialogue with North Korea during its first speech after taking office following a landslide victory in the polls.
Lee, originally from the Liberal Democratic Party of Korea, replaces President Yoon Suk-Yeol, who launched a national emergency last year when he briefly imposed martial law, citing antistate forces and North Korean infiltration.
On Wednesday, after taking oath to Parliament, Lee undertook to help South Korea reverse the course after months of uncertainty and political protest.
South Korea has also found itself under attack by the United States, an economic and higher security ally, where commercial protectionism is increasing under President Donald Trump.
“A Lee Jae-Myung government will be a pro-market pragmatic government,” said Lee in a speech.
Lee said he would try to make progress in South Korea relations with Pyongyang, working to “dissuade north-Korean nuclear and military provocations while opening up the communication channels and pursuing dialogue and cooperation to strengthen peace on the Korean peninsula”.
“We are going to cure the wounds of the division and the war and will establish a future of peace and prosperity,” he said.
“No matter how much peace is better than war,” he added.
Lee also warned that the “increase in protectionism and the restructuring of the supply chain” threatened a threat to the economy focused on South Korea exports and declared that it would respond to the cost of living cost to which families with low income.
The Government of the Korean of South Korea, which ruled after the ouster of Yoon, did not negotiate a trade agreement with the Trump administration to reduce the prices proposed on imports of the country.
The 25% prices of Trump’s “release day” on South Korea – aimed at approaching American commercial imbalance – are currently pending negotiations, but South Korean exporters have been hit by a new 50% rate on steel and aluminum products.
Lee won this week’s snap elections With 49.4% of the votes, well in advance on the conservative candidate Kim Moon-Soo, while South Korean voters have been proven in higher number since 1997.
