Saul Coco’s 74th-minute own goal gave Sudan their first points in Group E of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and left Equatorial Guinea still searching for theirs after two defeats.
Torino centre-back Coco pushed goalkeeper Jesus Owono to give Sudan a good chance of reaching the last 16 in Morocco.
The teams will play their final group stage matches on Wednesday (4:00 p.m. GMT / 11:00 a.m. ET / 8:00 a.m. PT), when Sudan faces Burkina Faso in Casablanca and Equatorial Guinea meets Algeria in Rabat.
Sudan are ranked 117th in the world by FIFA and reached the final despite being forced to play all of their qualifying matches outside their country, which was engulfed in civil war.
They will be considerable underdogs against Burkina Faso as they attempt to become one of the four most successful teams from the six groups to qualify, but three points have often been enough to advance in this manner.
Equatorial Guinea will also hope to finish on this score with what would be a surprise victory against Algeria.
The Fennecs beat Sudan 3-0 four days ago, when Equatorial Guinea squandered an 85th-minute lead only to lose thanks to two goals from Burkina Faso in added time.
Real Madrid prospect Loren Zuniga started again in attack for Equatorial Guinea, who had CAN 2023 golden boot winner Emilio Nsue on the bench.
Nsue, 36, plays for Spanish second division side Intercity and is his country’s top scorer.
Equatorial Guinea starting eleven: Jesus Owono, Marvin Anniebo, Orozco, Saul.
Equatorial Guinea substitutes: Author Arist, Old Nyra, Alex Balboa, Jannick Buyla, Jiniio Dorian, Emiles Nsuie, Charles Ordent, Micala, Michal Michel, Michel Assuee, Public Gange, Ganeloon, Supreme Sup.
Midfielder Salah Adil has been suspended for Sudan after being sent off against Algeria.
Several of Sudan’s most experienced players play for the Al-Hilal national team, including starting defenders Mohamed Ering and Mustafa Karshoum and midfielder Abdel Raouf.
Sudan starting lineup: Monged El Neel, Sheddy Barglan, Mohamed Ering, Mustafa Karshoum, Bakhit Khamis, Walieldin Khdir, Abdel Raouf, Ammar Taifour, Aamir Abdallah, Mohamed Abdelrahman, Mohamed Eisa
Sudan replaces: Ali Abu Eshrein, Altayeb Abdelrazig, Yaser Awad, Yasir Mozamil, John Mano, Mohamed Abuja, Mazin Mohamedein, Awad Zayed, Ahmed Tabanja, Al Gozoli Nooh, Abdelsamad Manen, Mohamed Tia Asad
