Whether it’s angering opposing fans, whistling a referee in the middle of a match or shouting one-liners during press conferences, Jamie Vardy has always been one of football’s great characters.
And in his first ever interview as a Cremona player, the 38-year-old striker showed exactly why.
Vardy, who joined the newly promoted Serie A side on a one-year deal after leaving Leicester City, was asked about his age and motivation during his unveiling.
“In Italy we are a little skeptical about players like you who are approaching forty. We tend to wonder where is their motivation, what is their physical form? What do you say to the skeptics? » asked a journalist.
Vardy’s response was as sharp as his conclusion.
“You must be one of the skeptics,” he retorted. “You’re the one I’m going to have to prove wrong.”
He added: “Age is just a number. As long as my legs are doing exactly what they were doing and feeling as fresh as they do, I will continue. At the moment there are no signs of slowing down, so I will continue. I will give everything for this club.”
Cremonese, who defied expectations last season to achieve promotion, have started brightly and sit top of Serie A after two games.
Vardy could make his debut this Saturday in a blockbuster clash at San Siro against Inter.
It’s time for Vardy to put his money where his mouth is – but if his career has taught us anything so far, it’s that skeptics should be concerned.
“You must be one of the skeptics, you are one of them, I will have to prove otherwise” 👀
