A vacation outing quickly turned chaotic after a Miami mother allegedly shot her son and now faces serious charges. Authorities say a violent domestic dispute escalated in broad daylight on Christmas Day, leaving a man hospitalized and his own mother in custody. And the woman at the center of it all is Roseita Lavette Smith.
According to prison records reviewed by Law & CrimeThe 50-year-old Miami woman was charged with aggravated battery with a weapon causing bodily harm after allegedly shooting her son, whose age has not been publicly disclosed, outside the popular Red Rooster restaurant in Miami’s Overtown neighborhood. Roseita Lavette Smith was booked into Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center shortly after midnight Friday and is currently being held without bond.
Police say that the incident has started earlier in the day, while Smith and her son were inside the restaurant having a family brunch. An arrest report obtained by local station WPLG says Smith was upset, accusing her son of being “disrespectful” to her and her other relatives. What started as a verbal disagreement allegedly continued when the two men left the restaurant and got into Smith’s vehicle.
Authorities say the argument escalated in the parking lot around 3 p.m. As the son exited the vehicle, Smith allegedly followed him and fired one shot, hitting him in the thigh. Officers arrived and found the victim lying on the ground, bleeding from his left leg. First responders treated him at the scene and transported him to a nearby hospital. Additionally, doctors deemed him in stable condition.
Smith had already fled the scene by the time police arrived. However, Miami the police then located her and arrested her the same day. During questioning, Smith allegedly told investigators she acted in self-defense. Smith claimed her son threatened to assault her after she refused to leave his car. She also referenced her son’s past behavior as part of her explanation.
Despite his claims, the police say that the victim has been identified Smith as the person who shot him, leading to his arrest. The investigation continues as the case moves through the court system.
