Morocco Coach Walid Regragui has dismissed concerns about the AFCON hosts’ form in the tournament so far and insisted he is still the right man to lead the North African side to their first title since 1976.
The Atlas Lions sit top of Group A after taking four points from matches against Comoros and Mali, although the 1-1 draw against the latter ended their record 19-game winning streak.
Friday’s performance was unconvincing and sparked criticism of Regragui in some quarters.
Despite this, the 50-year-old is confident he can inspire his team to home glory.
“Yes, I still think so, otherwise I wouldn’t be sitting here,” he said. “I have even more confidence than everyone, I think, in this group and this team. And we know that in a competition – even more in the African Cup of Nations, but in all competitions in general – it is at the end of the show that the musicians are paid.”
“The most important thing today is to continue our progress to win this match and finish first [in the group] stay in Rabat. This is our goal.
Captain Achraf Hakimi also asked impatient fans to stay with the team after boos were heard from the stands against Mali.
“I understand that the fans are not satisfied and we respect that,” said the Paris Saint-Germain full-back. “We will work to make them happy but we also need them.
“We play on our own soil. It’s not good to hear whistles every now and then. Our fans are our twelfth player.
“At PSG… people said we couldn’t win, that we didn’t have a strong team or a great coach. Yet we became European champions. With the support of our fans, we can become African champions together.”
Zambia have drawn their first two matches and go into this clash knowing that a victory will allow them to leapfrog Morocco and clinch qualification.
Zambia vs Morocco team news
Romain Saiss and Hamza Igamane are unlikely to be fit for Morocco, but Hakimi could benefit from some minutes on the bench as he continues his comeback from an ankle injury.
Zambia has no new concerns and is expected to be at full strength.
