Eleven people were killed and more injured after a stampede outside a cricket stadium in Bengaluru, in the south of the Karnataka state in India, where fervent fans met to celebrate the very first victory in title of the Indian Premier League for the city team.
Thousands of people gathered on Wednesday in anticipation of the arrival of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru team at the stadium to celebrate Tuesday’s victory in the IPL final.
The chief minister of the State confirmed the 11 deaths and 33 people seriously injured in the Stampede late Wednesday evening. All the injured are out of danger, according to officials.
“A moment of joy has been overshadowed by sorrow,” said Karnataka Minister Siddaramaiah Written on x.
He promised compensation for the families of the victims and added that before the deadly stampede, “precautionary measures were taken by not authorizing a parade of victory” due to the fear of the overview of the crowd.
“People have even broken the doors of the stadium,” Siddaramaiah told local media. “No one expected such a huge crowd.”
The Bengaluru police had sent a warning earlier than they had not approved a victory parade, while thousands of fans continued to come together.
At 3 p.m., around 50,000 people gathered within a one-kilometer department, according to the police, and the number continued to increase.
A video filmed outside the Chinnaswamy stadium in the heart of the city showed a host of people grouped at the entrance, with the crowd so large that dozens of fans were seen climbing on the walls and fences.
The crowd jumped, crushing several people, including at least one child, reported Indian television channels on Wednesday.
Siddaramaiah told a press briefing that more than 200,000 people had entered the stadium, which had only 32,000 capacity.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the incident “Absolutely heartbreaking” on X.
The accident in Bengaluru is absolutely heartbreaking. During this tragic hour, my thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that those who are injured have a quick recovery: PM @Narendramodi
“During this tragic hour, my thoughts are with all those who have lost their relatives,” said the tweet, published by the Prime Minister’s office.
“I pray for those who are injured to have rapid recovery.”
Bengaluru’s cricket team, which includes the star player and favorite of fans Virat Kohli, who recently announced his retirement from the International Test Cricket, beat Punjab Kings on Tuesday in the Indian Cricket League final.
It was the first IPL title of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru team after three unsuccessful attempts.
